David Fleming, a long-time resident of Westwood Road, has supplied the contents of the following 14 pages in the form of a photocopied booklet (which may explain the quality of the reproduction) - a trip along Memory Lane for some residents, if only for the advertisements. The pages came with the following notes.
As promised at the Forum meeting I enclose the Builder's Brochure of 'Banners Gate Estate'. I believe the estate was bounded by Chester Road North, Banners Gate Road, George Frederick Road and Sutton Oak Road. Begun in 1935/6 it was uncompleted when war broke out in 1939 (I have a photograph taken in 1947 of the Chester Road North - free of houses at one point). As regards the houses themselves, we live in Type C. Several of the houses in Westwood Road are Type A and B and Type D can be seen in Reay Nadin Drive between Westwood Road and Chester Road North. A lot of the houses have been modified and extended since they were built. Banners Gate School was here when we came to live in the area but a number of residents then, who bought their houses new, as they were built, have told us that the school area had been set aside for tennis courts.
Hope this may be of interest,
David
